Both schemes work. Client buys: transparent on money, but you own quantities and delivery timing. Contractor buys: faster with professional choices, but ask for receipts. In practice, rough materials go to the contractor, finish materials are the client's choice.

How do I accept work so I don't redo it later?

In stages, before the final payment: walls with a straightedge, tiles tapped for voids, every electrical point tested, plumbing under pressure with joints inspected an hour later. Record defects in writing with a fix deadline. The final payment comes only after the fixes.
